Bell Sounds From the 20th: August 2010

Sales Tax Holiday

I would like to encourage each of you to take advantage of Virginia’s Fifth Annual Sales Tax-Free Holiday, set for Friday, August 6 – Sunday August 8. Across Virginia you can save on school supplies priced at $20 or less per item, and clothing and footwear (priced at $100 or less per article of clothing or pair of footwear). Additionally, some retailers may voluntarily choose to absorb the sales tax on other items in their stores. All residents qualify for this tax exemption. For more information you can visit
Retirement from Augusta County Schools

Retirement from Augusta County Schools

As many of you are likely aware after weeks of discussion and attempts at compromise, I will be retiring from Augusta County Schools. Unfortunately the limitations that the School Board placed on my leave would prohibit me from serving the 20th District in the way that the District deserves to be served, and therefore has left me no choice but to retire from my teaching position.

While I believe that it is unfortunate that the partisan politics of the Augusta County School Board has gotten in the way, I will not let these personal vendettas interfere with my work as Delegate. I am committed to using my experiences to help reform public education, and have already taken steps to put forth legislation that will prevent this from happening to others who may seek public office in the future.

I appreciate the support that many of you have shown and continue to show throughout this whole ordeal. Your support means more than you know. I assure you that I will continue to work hard for the citizens of the 20th District.

School Board Responds to Bell's Plan to Retire

The Virginia Republicans have had a lot of successes over the past few months, both in and out of session. Despite these successes, however, the fight is not over. Many on the other side are not happy about what we have done in Virginia. I have worked hard and stood strong for the people of the 20th District, but need your help in order to continue to do so. If you are able to help me with a donation of any amount, please click here to make a secure donation online, or you can mail a check made out to Bell for Delegate to P.O. Box 239, Staunton, VA 24402. Thank you in advance for your help.

Office Hours

I am holding weekly office hours in my district office on the 2nd floor of City Hall in Staunton. I am in the office from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm each Thursday. Additionally, I am holding monthly office hours on the 2nd Friday of every month at the Highland County Public Library in Monterey. I will not be holding August office hours in Highland County, but Highland County Office Hours will resume Friday, September 10 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

County Fairs

We have three County Fairs coming up across the District that I want to make sure you are aware of. County Fairs are a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends across your community. I hope many of you have the opportunity to make it out to the fair in your area. I plan to attend each fair, and hope to see many of you out.

August 16 – August 21 – Rockingham County Fair

September 1 – September 4 – Highland County Fair
Governor McDonnell's Town Hall Meeting

Governor Bob McDonnell will be hosting a Town Hall event on Thursday, August 26 at 7:00 pm at James Madison University. This is a public event, and is a great opportunity to hear the Governor discuss the major policy issues facing the Commonwealth. I hope to see many of you there.

Poll Results

Last month we asked you your opinion on Governor McDonnell’s plan to privatize ABC stores in the Commonwealth. We heard back from a number of you, and across the District there seem to be many mixed feelings on this issue. As Governor McDonnell moves forward with his plan, I will continue to monitor your opinions on this important matter closely, and will certainly take it into consideration if and when this comes before a vote.
