HARRISONBURG – A bill to hold some abortion clinics to the same regulatory standard as hospital emergency rooms will be back before the Virginia General Assembly when the next session starts Jan. 12 in Richmond.
Del. Richard “Dickie” Bell, R-Staunton, is picking up where former Del. Matt Lohr left off. Lohr, a Broadway Republican, resigned his seat April 30 to become commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Lohr, who introduced the legislation last year, called the proposal a matter of safety. But critics of the proposed legislation, led by Planned Parenthood, have said the bill would limit low-income women’s access to abortions by making the procedures more expensive.
